The Reds
fall into the Côtes de Bergerac appellation and are a blend of
Merlot (50%) and Cabernet -Franc and Cabernet-Sauvignon.
They are a dark ruby-red colour, full-bodied and generous and
have a particular and unusual nose and aroma which is mainly
found in the best parcelles of the distinguished château.
When young -
usually during the first year - they have a tendency to be
slightly astringent due to the presence of tannins and
tartaric acid ; this is entirely natural for big, muscular
wines and ensures their longevity. They grow more refined
after several years in bottle and reach perfection at between
five and twelve years of age depending on the vintage.
The Whites
from Château Laroque ripen in the heart of the area which
falls into the Haut-Montravel appellation on the Dordogne
River (right bank) side of Montravel.
Wine-making methods which sacrifice quantity to quality,
successive harvesting passages where only the ripest grapes
are picked and a variety of other careful and constant
precautions mean that the wines of Haut-Montravel in general,
and those of Château Laroque in particular, display a
limpidity and perfume, a sweetness and a special sap which
make them wines fit for kings.
