The
commune of Vergt
de Biron is situated to
the south of the Dordogne département, in the canton of
Monpazier. It shares a border with the Lot et Garonne and is
reached by the departmental roads, D2 and D2E. The commune,
which comprises a plateau and a valley crossed by the Dropt
River and which is covered mainly with woodland and farmland,
has a surface area of 1616 hectares.
At the most recent census the population stood at 207.
Historical
Events
In May 1944, following a parachute drop of arms in the area, the
Germans imprisoned many of the villagers in the church. Some
were later released but others were deported and never seen
again, hence the presence of two war memorials in the
commune.
