A Brief
History
St Georges de Montclar is in fact composed
of two hamlets. The ruins of
Montclar Castle
(eleventh and sixteenth-century) overlook
the medieval village of the same name. The
castle was once one of the most beautiful
abodes in Périgord but was destroyed during
the Revolution and used for its stones in
the nineteenth century.
What
to See
A stroll through the narrow streets reveals
typical Périgourdin houses with pointed
roofs. An immense covered market hall was
rebuilt in the seventeenth century and
stands in the main square. Not far from the
market hall is the one of the oldest houses
in the village recognisable by its stone
pillared arcade.
