In the chapter
house of the
Abbey
Cloisters
lies a shroud which has drawn pilgrims to
Cadouin for over eight centuries. In fact
the pilgrimages themselves now play an
important role in the history of the shroud.
The winding
sheet was discovered in a church at Antioch
during the first crusade and the sacred
cloth brought thousands of worshippers to
Cadouin over the centuries and contributed,
in no small way, to the Abbey’s fame and
wealth.
However, in 1934
scientists established that the supposed
Sindon of Christ was a piece of cloth dating
from the eleventh century. |
