St George de Montclar Circuit

St Georges de Montclar, set in the heart of the Montclar forest, is a small medieval village, far off the beaten tourist trail but undoubtedly one of Périgord’s most delightful villages.

The partly demolished eleventh-century castle has known such illustrious guests as Rabelais, Montaigne and Brantôme; story has it that the owner, Monsieur d’Estissac even provided the inspiration for Rabelais’ Gargantua character.

A little further away, nestled in the valley, are the picturesque houses of St George’s hamlet. A stream of the same name - which originally formed the valley - eventually joins the River Caudeau.

But a few lines cannot convey the magic of this legend-ridden place nor describe the magnificent view awaiting the hardy walkers who attain the rock’s summit.
