The ramparts
of the
Walled Town of
Monpazier (Bastide de Monpazier)
have six fortified gates. Three of them
remain, two at the north (rue St Jacques and
rue Notre Dame), and one at the south (rue
St Jacques).
The gates, located on the main roads,
allowed passage, and were the boundary
between the interior and exterior of the
walled town.
In the existing towers, you can see the
grooves for the portcullis and the hinges
supporting the monumental wooden gates.
The exterior side of each gate has two
pointed arches, one of which is low. The
interior side has a barrel-arched archway. |
