A Brief
History
The castle displays little evidence of its
eleventh-century origins as it was destroyed
during the Revolution and was subsequently
used in the nineteenth century as a quarry.
There would be very little left at all if it
had not been for the intervention of the
Laureilhe family who, in 1880, constructed a
magnificent edifice on the site of the
medieval ruins.
There are several local legends concerning
the chateau de St Georges de Montclar.
Forty five
metres above ground level, the castle
dominates the village ; the best view of
this monument to local history can be had
from the square between it and the mairie. |
