Sonia Maupas, Basket weaver

Background
After studying Sociology at university, working in a bank and then working for ten years in tourism, I felt in need of a change of direction and it was at this precise moment that my partner introduced me to basket weaving. I discovered a talent for plaiting and the choice was made: I would become a basket weaver!

Activity

I grow different varieties of willow which means that I can work with multitude of different-coloured strands in making traditional objects but also in realising my own creations. My workshop is open to the public and I organise beginnerís courses in order to share this skill.

Philosophy
From cultivating to plaiting, I am involved in every stage of my activity to ensure high-quality wicker and to be able to select my colours. Out of respect for the environment, I have chosen to cultivate my osier bed without the use of chemical products. There is an intentional alliance between tradition and modernity in the objects I create which perpetuates this wonderful manual trade; one of the last to resist mechanisation due to the irregularities of the strands of wicker.

Workshop open all year by appointment.

Demonstrations in the workshop from 1st April to 30 September, Monday and Thursday from 2pm to 7pm. Free entry.
Please contact me for beginnerís courses.
