Jean-Paul Maignan, Wood Turner

Background and Activity
As a teenager, I loved working with wood… and I then turned this into my job by becoming a joiner. The wood with which I made my furniture came from trees that I had chosen myself and of which I had supervised the sawing and drying. After 11 years of this I then joined the Ministry of Defence as a joiner where I designed, created and installed exhibition stands.

Then I met a retired joiner who turned wood and, inspired, I bought a lathe.
I learnt and perfected this technique with the help of several vocational training courses and, during this period, discovered and became a member of AFTAB- the French association of woodturning as an art form.

I used a technique known as segmented woodturning and participated in a number of touring exhibitions at which I won various prizes (Art Biennial 2004, 2006 and 2010).
For several years, I also led two amateur woodturning clubs and taught new members the basics of woodturning.

In 2010, I settled in the Dordogne and devoted myself to my passion for woodturning, making objects out of green wood or by assembling pieces of wood (lampstands, clocks, boxes, Doric columns...)

Philosophy
Passionate about wood, I adapt to the different types of wood that I find to give them a second lease of life. Effectively, trees fall down or are awkwardly situated so, at exhibitions I put up a wooden engraved sign that reads “You’ve got wood, I’ve got ideas, let’s swap...”
This way I can often get wood in exchange for one of my creations. The different types of wood obtained in this manner are then stuck together creating a contrast in colour and wood-vein which, added to the shapes that I turn, make original creations.
