A Brief History
of the Ostrich
The oldest evidence of ostriches are the 5000-year-old outlines
engraved on the rocky walls of prehistoric shelters.
Chinese chronicles speak of large eggs offered to rulers of the
Celestial Empire.
In ancient Egypt, ostriches were included in the taxes in kind owed
to the Pharaohs. The Assyrians believed the bird to be sacred.
Roman gourmets considered ostrich meat a delicacy and served it
during feasts.
Throughout time the
ostrich has been tamed. Its feathers and leather were used in ancient
Egypt.
Not only were egg shells useful objects but, beautifully decorated by
the women, they constituted works of art.
The first ostrich farms
appeared in France between 1988 and 1989.
