A terroir is a
combination of climate, soil and exposure to the elements…
plus winemaking traditions. In the valley and on the left bank
of the Dordogne valley, the place called La Mouthe is located
at the junction of two geomorphological facies : the middle
terrace of the Dordogne river and the clay colluvium (sandstone
and chalk) originating from the Monbazillac hills.
As it lies in the heart of the Bergerac appellation area while
bordering on the Monbazillac appellation area, this part of
the region is almost exclusively dedicated to vine-growing.
Our grapevines
grow on the middle terrace. at about 42 metres above the
sea-level, on a flat ground allowing consistent exposure to the
elements.
The slightly convex plots offer several interesting
characteristics : -on the one hand their
soil allows for excellent drainage
-on the other hand they provide a good water-holding capacity
This type of soil (scarcity of nutrient elements, little amount
of organic matter, soil with a turn to acidity) offers a good
potential for viticulture provided it receives an adequate
amount of manure as required by ground analysis and gets a
proper treatment (high plantation density for a satisfying
return, ground work to improve air-circulation, stimulate
microbian life and help organic elements to evolve).
