Jean-Luc Favretto was born in the vines. From an early age he followed his parents into the vineyard in all seasons, then a little later, in the silence of the winery he was initiated into the magic of wine-making.
The wines of Château l’Ancienne Citadelle now carry his mark and are born from both tradition and the latest in viticultural techniques.

Jean-Luc Favretto spends most of his time surveying his vines and vats.
Michèle Favretto, on the other hand, devotes herself to managing the property and selling the wine. She is will be delighted to meet you or respond to any queries by telephone.

The story of a powerful fortress, a terroir and a fine wine.

MONTRAVEL : Mons revellum : the lookout hill, the discovery hill, from the Latin ‘revellere’.
A Roman hill-fort from 400 years BC, and powerful fortress during the Hundred Years War, Montravel fortress was destroyed in 1622.
The terroir resembles that of St Emilion. The vineyards of Montravel benefit from a temperate climate and a south / south-west orientation which encourages full maturation of the grapes.
The oldest reference to wine-making at Montravel dates from 1080.
From the early fourteenth-century the archbishops of Bordeaux drunk the wines of Montravel.
Montaigne, born in 1533 in the heart of the Montravel vineyards, himself a wine-producer, wrote in his Essays : « Wine is the God which makes men happy and gives back youth to the old.»
