Montaigne’s
historic tower where the author wrote his ‘Essays’.
The philosopher, Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, was born on 28
February 1533 at his father’s château. He spent his early
childhood there « fed by a poor village » called Papasus which
no longer exists. He wrote his famous ‘Essays’ in one of the
château’s towers which has remained since unaltered.
He twice received the King of Navarre, future Henry IV, in the
château whereupon important political negotiations took place.
