Montaigne’s historic tower where the author wrote his ‘Essays’.
The philosopher, Michel Eyquem de Montaigne, was born on 28 February 1533 at his father’s château. He spent his early childhood there « fed by a poor village » called Papasus which no longer exists. He wrote his famous ‘Essays’ in one of the château’s towers which has remained since unaltered.
He twice received the King of Navarre, future Henry IV, in the château whereupon important political negotiations took place.
