The Village
The village is well situated in relation to Bergerac, St Foy La
Grande and Marmande and benefits from their services only a few
kilometres away (hospitals, clinics, schools, shopping centres
etc.)
The last census revealed a
population of 825.
Sigoulès town centre has all the shops and services necessary
for day to day living.
Sigoulès’ health professionals include 3 doctors, 3 nurses, a dentist,
a physiotherapist and a chemist.
A primary school, secondary school, vocational secondary school
and an adult training
centre provide a local education service.
An out-of-school hours nursery and a multi-activity leisure
centre accepts children from 3 to 14.
Technologically- advanced businesses are setting up in ever
greater numbers in the Economic Activity Zone and the
Business
Centre is already full.
Local tradespeople are more and more numerous in using
«Chorum’s» secretverdana service.
Clubs have developed considerably over the last few years and
include a : Football Club, Tennis Club, Gymnastics Club, Judo
Club, Dance lessons, Amateur Dramatics Club and a Yoga Club.
Education/Child-care - Housing
- Tourism
Sigoulès, chief town since 1825
of the wine-producing canton which today counts 15 communes, is
situated between the Dordogne Valley and the bastides of the
Agenais Périgord on the sunny hillsides of the ‘Périgord
Pourpre’, so-called in reference to its vineyards.
Over the last few years Sigoulès has been overwhelmed with
requests for housing. Our wine-producing region is very popular
and every year new residents settle here from the four corners
of the country. Equally, those looking for a small piece of
countryside only a couple of kilometres from their work in
Bergerac, are settling in ever greater numbers.
In the summer
tourists appreciate the joys of the countryside while benefiting
from the proximity of our local village shops.
The municipality has made a concerted effort to improve the
housing situation in the village itself with several development
programmes of commune-owned buildings and by working in
partnership with the Bergerac Council Housing Programme.
The Bergerac Council Housing Programme has helped build a
council-housing estate. The commune has built a 7-house estate
called the «Fon de la May».
A second, 9-house estate - «Le Roby» is planned.
Education
and Child-care
Primary School - Co-ordinated timetables
In 1995, the creation of a
new grouped schools structure (RPI)
and experimentation with a timetable neatly organised to fit in
with the leisure centre, the secondary school and the private,
agricultural secondary school, was used as a pilot site by the
Ministry of Youth and Sports (to advance their own research into
the effects of structure on a child’s day) in 1996.
The school timetable reserves periods of time in which to
experiment new activities (sports, theatre, library, plastic
arts, music, cultural exchanges, technology etc.)
• This allows the child to discover new disciplines and make
progress within them.
• It helps the child out of a situation of academic
under-achievement by finding self-esteem in the chosen
discipline.
• It allows the child to pursue an activity simply for the
pleasure of it.
• Competitiveness and grades can be forgotten for a while.
• New ideas and working methods can be established (self-respect,
group work, sharing, a sense of civic duty etc.).
