Origins:
The 11th century church, which sits next to the ruins of the abbey, was built in honour of St Avit, a hermit who died in 570. The semi-circular apse was destroyed during the Wars of Religion.

What to See:
The church is situated on a hill, has 3 imposing defence towers and, from the outside, looks like a veritable fortress. The nave’s three bays were rib-vaulted in the 13th century.

The Saint Avit Sénieur Abbey is registered on UNESCO’s World Inheritance list under the heading of Compostelle Paths in France.
