St Jean’s
Church
was built at the end of the thirteenth
century (1272-1282), later than the
bastide
which encircles it.
Originally the church had a magnificent, 35m
long and 12m wide nave, which ended in a
flat apse to the east.
The façade
was framed by two square towers.
The four,
exceptionally large bays of the nave were
covered with rib vaulting and
reinforced with buttresses.
The vaults
collapsed in 1771 to be replaced several
times with panelling until in 1982 an
exposed timber roof frame was erected. |
