A Brief
History
Beauregard et Bassac was founded in 1286 by
Edward I of England and was instantly
baptised « Bastida Belli Grandi » due to its
beautiful location. It was never adequately
peopled and in 1365 counted only a hundred
or so inhabitants.
The
Bastide
In the town itself an old market hall is
supported by cylindrical stone pillars and
covered by a magnificent timber roof frame,
several beams of which are at least 15m long
Philip IV the
Fair built here a square castle with a tower
in each corner but it has since been
destroyed and a more recent building
constructed on the site of its ruins.
