The Neolithic tombstones were erected
5000-2000 BC and are formed of massive blocks
of stone. Two different types of monument
exist: dolmens, in which a burial chamber
capable of housing several corpses was created
out of several huge stones, and menhirs which
constitute a single great standing stone.
There are several examples of dolmens and
menhirs in the ‘Pays du Grand Bergeracois’
including
:
The White Dolmen
at Nojals-et-Clottes. Listed as an Historical
Monument, it is one of Périgord’s most
magnificent dolmens. The chamber is made from
great blocks of standing stone and covered
with stone slabs.
The Peyre Negro Dolmen at Nojals-et-Clottes.
Situated not far from the White Dolmen, it
forms a large table in brown rock.
