In 1994, to
replace the war memorial, a public
commission was given to Jochen Gerz, a
German artist. He erected an obelisk of
Dordogne yellow stone, which assembles, on
enamelled plates, the answers of the
commune’s adult inhabitants to a secret
question asked by the artist.
New inhabitants and children becoming adults
progressively will answer this question,
which remains secret. This original
monument, forever unfinished, encourages
thought about the value of life, and ideals
such as liberty, love for one’s country,
Europe. |
