The site is situated near Sigoniac Ponds which means that walking
and sightseeing can be neatly aligned. No time limit is imposed on
the visit.
In a beautifully preserved natural environment, the Sigoniac site
presents :
• The religious passage and a number of post-holes indicating the
earlier presence of a door, roof, fortifications and the first
dwelling on the chalk plateau.
• Presence of water outside, linking up to a spring.
• A series of three
underground rooms which were, in a different era, used as a defence
network (known as CLUZEAUX). One of these rooms has an acoustic
difference indicating the presence of WATER, doubtless providing the
ETYMOLOGY of the site’s name :
SIEG = HIGH - POWERFUL - VICTORY
ONA= EAU (WATER) (from an INDO-EUROPEAN root)
• The objects unearthed in the dig are displayed in an 8th-century
room and provide a good overall picture of the site.
