Grapevine Phylloxera, known as phylloxera vastatrix (planchon), is the
grapevine’s most fearsome enemy.
In France this aphid
caused most of the grapevines to waste away.
This scourge was a disaster for the whole wine growing industry and it
was necessary to reconstitute the vineyards.
Reconstruction was possible thanks to the grafting of vines.
It was at the end of the 19th century that phylloxera, brought by boat
from America, destroyed French vineyards, then European vineyards.

More than a century of experience has proved that grafting V. vinifera
vines, resistant stock, is a sure and permanent way to protect against
phylloxera, provided that stock from American vitis species is used.
