The ostrich is the
largest living bird in the world. It cannot fly but, thanks to long
muscled legs, it can run at up to 80km per hour.
Its large and astonishing powerful feet have two toes only one of
which has a nail. The ostrich has extraordinarily good eyesight
allowing it to spot an object several kilometres away.
In the wild they become adult at three years old, remain fertile
until about forty and live for anything up to seventy years. They
live in small herds.
The black-neck is the
best adapted for breeding purposes. It is slightly smaller than the
red or blue necked-bird and less aggressive. It is easier to work with
and a better breeder.
Currently, 99% of ostrich products (meat, leather etc.) come from
black-necks.
Our ostriches are born and bred on the property. They subsist mainly
from food found in their environment although they are also given and
alfalfa-maize supplement.
