Sightseeing :

Montaigne’s Tower is situated in the commune of St Michel de Montaigne. The library tower is listed as an “Historic Monument”.

Villefranche de Lonchat Local History Museum retraces the history of the Montaigne et Gurson area over several centuries. The museum has expanded thanks to local donations and has recently added a medical room to its exhibits.

 

Montcaret Gallo-Roman Ruins : 1st and 4th century ruins - considerably transformed during the Middle Ages - which belonged to a peristylar Gallo-Roman villa and courtyard. The extensive floor mosaics are of an exceptional quality.

Sardy Gardens, created around an 18th-century home, were inspired by English and Florentine gardening styles.

St Michel de Montaigne Church is a listed Historical Monument. It dates from the 12th century but was extended in the 15th. In the church is a magnificent, recently restored, baroque retable ; a pendentive cupola ; a semi-circular apse ; baroque furniture ; Montaigne’s father’s tomb and Michel Eyquem de Montaigne’s heart.

There are also many other village churches worth visiting, particularly : Carsac de Gurson, Montpeyroux, St Martin de Gurson, St Rémy de Lidoire, Vélines and Villefranche de Lonchat.
