Montcaret Gallo-Roman Ruins
: 1st and 4th century ruins -
considerably transformed during the Middle Ages - which belonged
to a peristylar Gallo-Roman villa and courtyard. The extensive
floor mosaics are of an exceptional quality.
Sardy Gardens,
created around an 18th-century
home, were inspired by English and Florentine gardening
styles.
St Michel de Montaigne Church
is a listed Historical Monument.
It dates from the 12th century but was extended in the 15th.
In the church is a magnificent, recently restored, baroque
retable ; a pendentive cupola ; a semi-circular apse ; baroque
furniture ; Montaigne’s father’s tomb and Michel Eyquem de
Montaigne’s heart.
There are also many other village churches worth visiting,
particularly :
Carsac de Gurson,
Montpeyroux,
St Martin de Gurson,
St Rémy de Lidoire,
Vélines and
Villefranche de Lonchat.
