Singleyrac is
situated in the heart of the vineyards and bastides of the
south-eastern quarter of the Dordogne known as the «
Périgord Pourpre ». The
prehistoric sites of the Dordogne Valley are not far away. The
village has many activities and much to offer the
holiday-maker.
Singleyrac is a charming, rural « touristy » commune. The
village itself is planted with flowers and
situated half-way between
Bergerac and Eymet; it
is reached by the departmental road 15 (D15) and is near the
Bastide Trail and the Wine Route.
Etymologically
the name comes either from the Latin « singularis »,
‘sanglier’ (wild boar) or from the name of a Gallo-Roman
landowner. The discovery of ancient bronze artefacts dating
from 1800 -1500 BC testify to man’s presence in the area since
this era.
The village boasts a couple of thirteenth-century buildings,
one of which now houses the town hall and the other of which
has been converted into a holiday home. In 1680 the parish was
called « Saint Gleyrac ».
The village church has Roman foundations and a rib-vaulted
chancel.
